Preoperative Instructions

Once you are booked in for surgery, Dr Cheng will give you request forms for blood tests and/or any scans you may require before surgery. This requirement will vary depending on your age, fitness and what surgery you are undergoing.

You will be provided with a Preadmission Guide which contains essential information of your admission. Fill out the Personal Details Form, Medication Summary Form and Health Assessment Form in the guide and bring them to your admission.

Bariatric Surgery patients will need to undergo a period of Meals Replacement Therapy prior to surgery. This is by use of a Very Low Calorie Diet (VLCD) to replace all your daily meals. The period is between 2-3 weeks leading up to the date of your surgery. The dietitian will assist you and provide you with different options. Meals Replacement Therapy helps you to lose 5-10kg and reduce any fatty liver disease before surgery, making your surgery safer. VLCD meals are purchased at your own expense. Advise Dr Cheng if you have any food intolerance during your consultation. He and the dietitian will advise you how best to prepare yourself for your surgery.

A few days before your surgery, you will receive two phone calls from the hospital, one from the hospital administration and one from the Preadmission Clinic Nurse to talk about your admission, your medications and fasting details. Your anaesthetist will also contact you to discuss your general anaesthesia and postoperative pain relief. Please feel free to raise any related concerns.

On the day of your surgery, please remember to fast as instructed by the Preadmission Clinic Nurse. Present yourself to the Admission and Welcome Lounge, the friendly staff and nurses there will check you in and help you get ready for your surgery. Dr Cheng and the anaesthetist will meet you at the Holding Bay just before your procedure.
